Goodbye Republicans

Being the Independent opinion-spewing person that I am, I love to watch the demise of the Republican party. What a long way they've come from the Reagan days. Now as I watch the political happenings in Washington, I find myself looking at someone like Ted Kennedy and wondering why he gets it and they don't. I really feel uncomfortable and actually a bit irate when I'm forced to take the side of that fucking ghoul. But alas, the Republicans cease to amaze.

The news piece I'm referring can be found here. The Democrats are trying very hard to raise the minimum wage. Because you know, the minimum wage hasn't been raised since 1997. 11 fucking years of economical growth in the USA, and our poor-choice making individuals (and young people) in the US are still getting fucked.

The Dems fell short 8 votes in the Republican controlled Senate. Here's the bottom line. Bush has turned off the average American so badly, that the Democrats are going to win a lot of seats this election year. They're going to either get the House or Senate. The Republicans will lose their trifecta. They would actually have a chance at keeping all 3 parts of our fine Government (not including the Judicial branch) if they would just take their heads out of their asses and begin to listen to what Americans want. The average American.

In many states in the United States without a state minimum wage, people are still working for $5.15. That's fucking despicable and deplorable in this day and age. Kennedy and the Democrats were trying to raise the minimum to $7.25. Now I think this is way too high, but the fact remains that it hasn't been raised in 11 years. I find that to be unbelievable and shocking. I say bullshit.

This country needs a nationwide adjustable minimum wage like we have in Florida. Every year the minimum wage is adjusted based upon inflation. That's the way it should. In reality, everyone would still be making their minimum wage. It's just adjusted for inflation. If the Republicans could get their shit straight and stop catering to their base and actually look out for young people in this country who just might be trying to get through college, they might realize that the best idea would be to reach a compromise. Instead, the Democrats will win the Senate this election year and they will raise the minimum wage to $7.25. Too high, yes. But regardless, it needs to be raised.

I love watching the demise. I watch and laugh. Bush has ruined the party. The average voter in this country is so turned off by what Bush has turned the Republican party into, not to mention what he's turned conservatism into. Now a days, to be a conservative is to hate fags, the desire to force Jesus into everyone's life and to be all about big Government. This is what Bush has done. The damage is just astonishing. He's going to go down in history as one of the biggest mistake making presidents ever. In the history books, which will be written by those Liberal college campus types, Bush will be checking into Hooverville.

Update: If all of my fine points were enough to convince you that our Government is a fucking joke, have a looksie at this story. It's just plain fucking deplorable. The behavior of these shameless scumbag cocksucking elected douche bags really makes me feel shame for living in a country that is run by people like this. They elect themselves a pay raise every fucking year. And the American public hasn't been given a fucking raise since the Bicentennial. Every year for almost 10 years, Congress have voted themselves more money. They're paid more than the average Doctor now. Every year for 11 years, they have refused to give the minimum wage worker in America a raise. That is fucking embarrassing. I could make an entire post on this load of horse shit.

i was gonna bring up the exact point zach brought up about the supply and demand issue. it's called MINIMUM wage for a reason..you shouldn't be able to live off of it. the higher you raise the minimum wage, the less profit businesses will make, because they have to pay the worker more, and that's just gonna cause more workers to be laid off. i like florida's system of minimum wage based on inflation though. that's a good idea.
by the way, the minimum wage here is $7.30..pretty fuckin good amount of money just to flip burgers...

That's completely assinine, kyle. Why do you think people get "cost-of-living" raises? Because it's the fucking cost of living that's going up! Higher gas prices, linear economic inflation in our country, not to mention rent & homeownership. Christ, look at North Dakota & Minnesota. Lowest paid professionals in the country! Rent in Grand Forks is ridiculously high for our population. Someone working for $5.15/hour SHOULD be able to at least live in an efficiency apt. THAT'S what min. wage is supposed to do, it's supposed to let you be able to live somewhere off the street, even if it is a shitty little one-room apartment. Even renting a room for $200 a month is BARELY cutting it.
Minimum wage isn't just for high school kids trying to get a start in the adult world, it's also for delivery people, waiting staff, and generally jobs in which you're just starting out. It's used a lot of the time as a "probationary" pay, but it was NOT designed so that you could still NOT live off it. That's just what it's become. And I fully agree with MAtt, that after almost a decade, it NEEDS to be updated to be proportional to the actual cost of living today.
I also understand that money doesn't grow on trees for these businesses, and doing this could hurt people who have earned their raises. I'm a hardcore capitalist, so this will always be something on my mind. There are definitely those who do harder work and thus deserve more pay, and those who know how to attract customers/clients to the work they do. But one thing companies do like is low turnover employment rates, and if they continue to pay shitty wages, then people aren't going to stay in those jobs.

I agre that our system is broken and a sick and tragic waste of our money. But...

I disagree that the Republicans are out automatically because they still hold the trumpo cards on one key issue and that is immigration reform.

There are many (not all) who want to get tough on illegal immigration, there are few (if any) Democrats who want to do the same.

The next election will be a referendum on illegal immigration and will be won or lost on that issue.

Minimum wage is just one of those wedge issues that come up to clearly divide the parties.

Minimum wage is a tough issue for me as a Libertarian I dont believe in many Government controls but if left unfettered buisness will cruch the little man in the name of profit.

A few points from the above discussions.

"Flipping burgers" is a skill it is called cooking and many people make a good living at it thoguh not at McDonalds.

There are nto enough people making minimum wage to cause infaltion if a raise is given. In fact when it was raised inthe 90s there was no resulting inflation.

If prices go up as a result it will be because of corporate greed to keep profit levels high. Corporations like McDonalds are certainly in no danger of not making their bottom line.

Good post Matt, its been a long time.
